The 6th edition of Porto Musical in tropical Recife, Brazil, just ended after 4 days and nights filled with fruitful encounters and a thrilling festival experience in downtown Recife - and the WOMEX team is already working 24/7 on a new co-production project on the other side of the ocean:
ATLANTIC MUSIC EXPO - A PLATFORM FOR TRANSATLANTIC CULTURAL EXCHANGES
A new professional music meeting for Cape Verde, Africa, and both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Music Expo Cabo Verde will take place in the capital, Praia, on Santiago Island. Nestled in the ocean, it offers the perfect setting for new musical finds and relaxed networking among international music professionals and musicians from the archipelago and abroad.
Scheduled right before the renowned Kriol Jazz Festival (Praia, 11-13 April), Atlantic Music Expo will feature a conference, a professional market and a full showcase programme to foster transatlantic collaboration and cultural exchange.
Cape Verdean history is closely linked to the transatlantic slave trade. The archipelago is committed to being a crossroads for positive exchanges and a central point for spreading the vision of creolisation - which lies at the heart of the Cape Verdean identity - and to keeping peace in the region.
The music and history of Cape Verde are intrinsically tied. Its wealth of talent and diversity of native styles give Cape Verde a unique musical identity. The worldwide success of its most famous singer, the late Cesaria Evora, is testament to the awesome artistic potential of these tiny islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Ministry of Culture of Cape Verde has chosen two experienced partners to ensure a high standard of event production, programming and international media coverage: Harmonia, a Cape Verde-based label, distribution and event producer headed by WOMEX Label Award winner José da Silva; and WOMEX - the world music expo - the most international of all professional music networking events worldwide, which will be moving to Cardiff, Wales, UK in October this year.
